Every few years a new manufacturer makes a commercial 3d printer that everyone thinks is the best thing ever to happen to 3d printing. They start out using machine designs and software that was made by the open source community in the spirit of making the technology available to everyone and immediately take credit for it, then change a few lines of code and act like their "proprietary" code is worth the ridiculous amount of money they charge for their stuff. Surprisingly they manage to make a pile of money off of this scenario because people buy into the hype and are generally looking for an easy way to brag about how awesome their stuff is compared to yours....that's just how some people are.
Well the good news is after these people get bored with their new toy and find something else to go make themselves feel better than everyone else about you can buy these things for next to nothing on your favorite second hand web site, goodwill etc. right now you can buy a used 3d printer for under 100 bucks, it might need some tlc but you can have an entire print farm for next to nothing.
In a few years another manufacturer will pop up and the other ones will fade into obscurity, and the next generation of "doers" will be making innovations for them to copy and the cycle will continue.
